How Tip Calculation Works

Tip = Bill Amount x (Tip Percentage / 100)

The tip calculation is straightforward: multiply your bill amount by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal. Then add the tip to the original bill for the total.

Tip Amount = Bill x (Tip% / 100)Total = Bill + Tip AmountPer Person = Total / Number of People

Example calculation:

  1. Bill: $85.00 with an 18% tip
  2. Tip amount: $85.00 x 0.18 = $15.30
  3. Total: $85.00 + $15.30 = $100.30
  4. Split 4 ways: $100.30 / 4 = $25.08 per person

Always calculate your tip on the pre-tax subtotal for the most accurate amount. Tipping on the after-tax total is also common and results in a slightly higher gratuity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the United States, the standard tip at a restaurant is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 20% to 25% is common. For buffets or counter service, 10% is typical. Always tip on the pre-tax amount, not the total after tax.

Should I tip on the total bill or just the food?

You should tip on the pre-tax subtotal of your bill, which includes food and drinks but excludes sales tax. Some people choose to tip on the after-tax total for simplicity, which results in a slightly higher tip. Either approach is acceptable.

How do I split a tip between multiple people?

Divide the total bill (including tip) by the number of people. This calculator does this automatically. For example, if a $100 bill has a 20% tip ($20), the total is $120. Split between 4 people, each person pays $30. Some groups prefer to split based on what each person ordered.

Is it rude to not leave a tip?

In the United States, not leaving a tip is considered rude because servers often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips as a significant part of their income. In other countries, tipping customs vary widely. In Japan, tipping can be considered offensive, while in many European countries a small tip of 5-10% is appreciated but not required.

How much should I tip for delivery or takeout?

For food delivery, 15% to 20% is standard, with a minimum of $3-5 for small orders. For takeout, tipping is optional but 10% is appreciated. During inclement weather or for large/complex orders, consider tipping on the higher end. Rideshare and taxi tips are typically 15% to 20%.
